FAQ

What is a Custom Heat Transfer?

Custom heat transfers are bespoke designs printed onto specialized transfer films (such as DTF, PU/PU Flock, or sublimation paper) that can be applied to textiles or other substrates using a heat press. They allow you to create any graphic, logo, or text in full color and transfer it onto garments, bags, hats, and more.

  • Cotton & Cotton Blends: Excellent results with DTF, PU, and cut vinyl. Colors appear vivid and adhesion is strong.

  • Polyester & Poly Blends: Works with DTF and sublimation (sublimation only on light-colored polyester). DTF adheres well to tight-knit polyester.

  • Canvas, Denim & Heavy Wovens: DTF is recommended; you may need slightly more pressure. PU/PU Flock can also work but test for hand-feel.

  • Nylon & Performance Fabrics: DTF may adhere adequately—test first, and slightly increase pressure. Sublimation is not suitable.

  • Not Recommended: Very stretchy fabrics (100% spandex/Lycra) or heavily textured wool—transfers may crack or not bond uniformly.

  • Print your design (white underbase + CMYK) onto DTF film, sprinkle with adhesive powder, and cure in a dryer.

  • Place the cut film ink-side-down on the garment, heat-press at 160–165 °C for 10–12 s, then warm-peel the PET layer.

  • Optional: Cover with Teflon and press 5–7 s more for extra durability.

  • DTF Transfers: 160–165 °C (320–330 °F), medium–high pressure, 10–12 s, warm peel, plus optional 5–7 s seal.

  • PU / PU Flock: 150–155 °C, medium pressure, 8–10 s, cold or warm peel.

  • Always test on a fabric scrap to confirm exact time/temperature.

  • Ideal: 100% cotton, cotton/poly blends, polyester, canvas, denim—DTF and PU adhere well and wash-resistant.

  • Acceptable with tests: Lightweight nylon or performance sportswear (use slightly more pressure).

  • Not recommended: 100% spandex/Lycra or heavily textured knits (may crack or not bond evenly).

  • Color & Resolution: CMYK mode at 300 DPI at final size.

  • Formats: AI, EPS, PDF (vector), PSD, TIFF, PNG (with transparency), or high-res JPEG.

  • Bleed & Cut Lines: Add 3 mm (0.125″) bleed if edge-to-edge; keep key elements 3–5 mm from trim. Provide a vector outline for contour cuts or transparent PNG.

Core Components

  • Transfer Material: Could be transfer paper (inkjet/laser), printable vinyl, or specialized film.

  • Ink/Printable Layer: Depending on the process, inks are either pigment‐based (for heat‐transfer paper) or formulated adhesives (for vinyl).

  • Heat Press: A machine that applies controlled temperature (typically 300–375 °F / 150–190 °C) and pressure for a set dwell time (5–20 seconds).

Process & Applications

Heat-Transfer Paper

  • Process: Print mirrored design on transfer paper; heat-press onto fabric.

  • Applications: Logos/photos on cotton or cotton-blend garments.

Sublimation Transfer

  • Process: Print on sublimation paper; heat (≈375 °F) fuses ink into polyester fibers.

  • Applications: All-over prints on polyester apparel, mugs, coated metal.

Direct-to-Film (DTF)

  • Process: Print on PET film; add adhesive powder, cure, then press onto any fabric.

  • Applications: Durable prints on cotton, polyester, blends, nylon, dark fabrics.

Cut-Vinyl (HTV)

  • Process: Cut design from vinyl; weed excess; heat-press onto fabric.
  • Applications: Single- or multi-color graphics on t-shirts, hoodies, bags.

Durability & Washability

Method & Wash Life

  • Heat-Transfer Paper: ~10–20 washes (cotton blends).

  • Sublimation: 100+ washes (≥90 % polyester).

  • DTF: 50–100 washes (cotton, blends, dark fabrics).

  • HTV (PU): 30–75 washes (cotton/blends).

Care Instructions

  • Wash inside-out, cold/warm (30–40 °C), gentle cycle.

  • Use mild, bleach-free detergent; avoid softeners.

  • Tumble dry low or hang-dry; iron inside-out on low.
